The art scene is Charlotte is thriving and diverse Whether you're an aficionado or somebody looking for entertainment in the city, there's a lot to see as far as the art culture is concerned. From theatres to art galleries, there is a little something for everybody and their specific interests. We're here with some information on local museums and galleries in the area.

NoDa
NoDa, or North Davidson, is Charlotte's historic entertainment and art district. There are gallery crawls on the first and third Fridays of the month, music venues, and unique eateries to choose from. One of the newest is Mango's Caribbean Restaurant! NoDa is always a pleasant place to spend a day or evening with all of the great businesses and eccentric murals.

Museums and Galleries
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
This art museum is located in the heart of Uptown. Those who enjoy mid century modernism will enjoy the small yet high quality collection of work here. On the first Friday of the month there's live jazz entertainment by local musicians the Ziad Quartet.

Mint Museum
Mint Museum in Uptown has regularly rotating exhibits which always makes for an interesting visit! All ages can be entertained looking at the various sculptures and works of art here. They offer yoga classes as well as Wine Wednesdays in the museum store, and admission is free on Wednesdays.

New Gallery of Modern Art
This is a small gallery in Uptown that doesn't disappoint fans of modern and contemporary art. It's not too far from the Bechtler, so it's a good idea to enjoy both in one day. The exhibitions are always unique, featuring both international and local artists.

McColl Center for Art & Innovation
A visit to the McColl Center for Art & Innovation is always interesting. It's an old church that has been revitalized into an artist residency, and you can even speak with the artists as they work if you get lucky. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5, and they're open Tuesday through Saturday.

Transformation Series: "Out of the Light" & "Out of the Dark" by Nate Lonnen

20"x24" Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas

“Out of the Light” & “Out of the Dark” are the last two pieces we have to talk about in the transformation series. I chose to discuss these paintings together because the idea behind them becomes much more paramount when weighing each option. Behind the two paintings I also incorporated other series that I have worked on allowing my work to try and flow freely between the different ideas I try and portray in my art. There are fairly subtle hints of Opposing Forces, and if you look closely you will see the Poetic Series at work too. (If you look closely into the collage you will hopefully find some methods and reasoning’s behind how I placed different words and phrases.)

I do not want to give too much away on these pieces because they were made for each observer to find their own ideas and voice within the two. Also, I am positive that each time you look at the each painting you will come away with something new you may have missed on your first observation. I will tell you though; that there is a choice to make as you look at each piece separately and together. And the choices could change or reveal something totally different depending on whether or not you look at them as one or choose to look at them separately.

I am always willing to discuss more and have insightful conversations so please let me hear from you!

Transformation Series: "Emergence from Chrysalis" by Nate Lonnen 24"x30" oi on canvas.

Just by reading the title of this painting, “Emergence from Chrysalis” you start to grasp what I was trying to represent. In case you do not know, “Chrysalis” is the stage when the moth or butterfly undergoes it transformation into adult hood. Although we are not enwrapped in a cocoon there are different stages in our lives when we also undergo growth and transformation. Whether it be physical, mental, personal or a slew of other ways we grow and learn. Through our lives we will change not only once but many times over and it is up to us to make that change turn into something beautiful and delicate. The butterfly symbolizes this idea of becoming more brilliant than we once were not only individually but also as a family, society and ultimately as a species.

Transformation Series: "Molting" by Nate Lonnen 18"x24" oil on canvas.

"Molting" is the second piece I created in the Transformation Series. With this painting I really envisioned creating an idea of rebirth. I strove to use the first face as an idea of shedding off your old skin/perceptions/sins/ect.. I have the small face being born looking up to all the new possibilities this new world has to offer. It looks as if it is exhaling a huge breathe from his mouth. I tried to use this as a symbol of new beginnings. Once you shed off your old skin, you can let go of all the negative energy from your previous life, too begin anew. The blood washes you clean and has a religious context with the notion of Christ’s blood cleansing your sins and making you whole. I liked the idea of using very earthy colors because we all become dust in the end but what we do while we are alive is up to us. It is up to us to fill in the colors of our lives and we should always know that it is never too late to start again. Yet to do that it takes forgiveness not just from the people that surround and love us but even more importantly we need to forgive ourselves. We all make mistakes and live with burdens and regrets but we should never give up. We cannot let our demons win out and define who we are. We were made to be resilient, compassionate and strong. So in that strength we can find new life to hopefully live a better one than the first.

The Transformation Series is about rebirth and rejection. It is a series dependent on evolution and introspection. Shed the old skin that controls or defines you, in order to transform into that which you most desire.

Hello everyone!

I hope you that you enjoyed the poetic series that I shared with you the past weeks. This so far is the last piece piece I have created for the series but more than likely not the final. I hope through the series that you all found some enjoyment with not only the  paintings but the intertwining of the poem and the title to create hopefully different points of view on the artwork as a whole.

"Wary Eye's" is the most ambiguous piece I have created in this series.  It is up to you, to decide how it reflects in your own life. I would love to hear how you would interpret the piece, so please comment and share with us!

Poetic Series Cont: "Will the Red Moon Arise" by Nate Lonnen 24"x36" Acrylic on Canvas.

"Will the Red Moon Arise" is my second painting and poem about my thoughts on a warriors spirit. This poem is also about the trials and tribulations of everyday life. I wanted to make this poem ambiguous so that people could relate it to their own lives. I chose the Samurai to represent my warrior in this painting for the ideology and code the Samurai lived by. I find that the Samurai represented the best of a warriors spirit in fighting for honor and devotion. Share with me your thoughts on the subject!

Poetic Series Cont: "Warrior Poet" by Nate Lonnen. 11"x14" Oil on Canvas Board.

The Poetic Series is based on poems that I wrote myself in which the paintings & the poems really give life to each other. In the "Warrior Poet" I tried to capture the essence of what it might have been like to be a Native American back when everything was wild and pure. I imagine what type of thoughts a warrior would have while in the heat of battle or pursuit of a hunt. I wanted the painting to reflect this inner battle and the stoic emotions on a brave warrior spirit.

Poetic Series Cont: This is a series of 3 Oil paintings by Nate Lonnen.

The Poetic Series is a series based on poems that I wrote myself in which the paintings & the poems really give life to each other. These paintings are a bit unique within the series as a whole because I didn't incorporate the poem onto the painting. Also, these 3 paintings are meant to be shown together in this specific order: "Tempest", "Betrayed" & "Climb". These 3 paintings together make up the whole of the poem called "Love Story" a poem I wrote while experiencing a very difficult time in my life. One that I will have to admit was made up by very poor choses on my behalf. I lost a lot through that time but learned also a great deal more.

Solace

Shadows caress your bosom,
Gliding gauging gravitating,
Sliding over your shoulders,
Slightly savoring your structure,

Darkness cascading down your spine, Descending draping drifting,

Flowing softly around your hips,
Falling freely flattering your form,

A dimness swiftly clutching your toes,
Coursing creating clenching,

Engulfing the glow eradicating all essence, Existence extinguished as emptiness is embraced
